Question: I got a new macbook because my old laptop died so all my songs I had on my windows is only on my ipod. How to I transfer the songs from the ipod to the macbook without erasing the songs on my ipod? The only option I can see on itunes is syncing, but it tells me that if I sync it will replace what's on my ipod with what's on the macbook. I want to do the opposite of this, how do I do it?
Answer: 1)If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (? and ? Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2)To transfer iTunes store purchased music, songs to Mac, you can just transfer them to any computer that is authorized for your iTunes Store account.
3)To transfer non-purchased songs/music from iPod to Mac, you can use a third party software called
iPod Music to Mac Transfer to retrieve the music files from your iPod.
